Beaches at Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a beachside town, situated in the lee of the elevated Cape Byron, beside a beach to its north, and a fringing national park and beaches immediately to its south.
Byron Bay’s beaches are famous among the surfing community. They were “discovered” back in the 60’s by early surfing adventurers and instantly put on the surfer’s map. Since then, surfing has had a significant influence in the town’s development. Today, Byron Bay remains a favourite destination for surfing and beach followers, content to enjoy the superb clear waters and magnificent beaches. Tranz Surf offers transfers, lunch and surfing lessons in Byron Bay.

The beaches spread for kilometres north and south from the town. The closest is Main Beach, a superb wide golden sand strip, perfect for year round sun baking and swimming. It is situated a short walk from the town’s centre. Curving to its east is Clarkes Beach. Both are patrolled in summer, and it is along this stretch of sand the well known sand sculptor, Steve Machell, known as the Sandman, builds his amazing creations.
Cape Byron Kayaks, Go Sea kayaks and Watersports Guru operate their half day ocean kayak tours from these beaches. All the surf shops in town hire surf and body boards.
Around a small headland from Clarkes Beach is Watego’s and Little Watego’s, both superb spots, being safe and sheltered and with nearby conveniences and bbq’s. On Sunday mornings, Watego’s is taken over by long-boarders riding the long break, quite a spectacle in itself, taking one back to the early days of modern surfing.
To the west of Main Beach is Belongil Beach and The Wreck, the underwater remains of a ship sunk during a storm many moons ago, now a favourite snorkeler’s spot. Further along to the north is a designated clothes optional area. Have a look at the different dive and snorkel options available with Watersports Guru.
On the south side of the Cape, overlooked by its lighthouse, is Tallow Beach, which stretches into the distance, interrupted only by a small headland before becoming Seven Mile Beach as it nears Lennox Head. At that headland are three coves, each with a delightful beach. However, access is difficult and care should be taken. Tassiriki Ranch Horse Riding conduct their Beach Trail Rides along Tallow Beach.
