Taronga Zoo is living up to its reputation of being the zoo with a view!
Situated on large elevated land along the water, this zoo overlooks the Sydney Cove, the Harbour Bridge, and the Opera House and has long been regarded as the zoo with a view.
Last week, it opened a new 3 metre high boardwalk around the mountain that the Himalayan tahrs rule near the water. Beginning at the chimp exhibit and concluding at the African walkway, this scenic walkway offers a more seamless journey through the zoo and a new perspective of the stunning Sydney Harbour views.
As well, it offers visitors an opportunity to get close to the tahrs, as well as the barbary sheep and snow leopards. Observing the mountain goats from their level (without having to climb!) is impressing all recent visitors; at eye level, guests can better see the Himalayan beauties’ climbing agility and can even interact with the curious creatures.
Of course, the awesome views are not all Taronga has to offer. Regarded as the nation’s leading zoo, Taronga Zoo features the finest and most diverse collection of both native animals and exotic species.
The zoo also offers a variety of fascinating tours, such as “Keeper for a Day” or “Sounds of Science,” that bring guests behind the scenes. One unique experience is “Roar & Snore,” which invites guests to spend the night at the zoo in safari tents, set up next to the lions, snow leopards, and meerkats.
The zoo also offers daily informative and interesting animal shows, keeper talks, and animal encounters. In fact, for ANZ Zoo Month, there is a special animal encounter with the elephants scheduled for Sunday, August 28th. Currently home to three calves, the elephant exhibit always entertains. Visit it this Sunday between 10:30am and 2:30pm and receive a special photo with an elephant backdrop.
The Zoo Express from Darling Harbour or Circular Quay is the easiest way to get to the Taronga Zoo. Package deals including a return ferry, a Sky Safari cable car ride, and entrance to the zoo are available.
