Two of Australia’s icons, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef, are in the running to be placed among the world’s new seven natural wonders and they need votes!
New7Wonders of Nature is an initiative to compile a new list of natural wonders determined through a global poll (rather than by one person as it was done in ancient times).
In 2007, the preliminary global vote nominated over 440 locations in over 220 countries, before narrowing it the top 77. At this stage, 13 of Oz’s sites were in the running, including Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, the Twelve Apostles, Kakadu National Park, Fraser Island, Pinnacles Desert, the Australian Alps, the Blue Mountains, the Green Cauldron, the Flinders Ranges, Cradle Mountain and the Bungle Bungles.
In 2009, based on selected criteria, the New7Wonders Panel of Experts narrowed this further to the top 28. Now for Australia, only Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef remain in the running. It is now up to the public around the world to vote for the new wonders of the world. The seven with the most votes will be announced on November 11, 2011.
While extremely beautiful, Australia’s leading sites face stiff competition such as New Zealand’s Milford Sound, the Maldives, Brazil’s Iguazu Falls, America’s Grand Canyon, South Africa’s Table Mountain and Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands.
The fierce competition from around the world only makes us more proud to have two of our sites in the final stage! Regardless of the results, one thing is for sure—a visit to Uluru and to the Great Barrier Reef is a must do. Add a tour around Uluru and a reef adventure to your bucket list!

Queensland, “where Australia shines”, is home to many popular holiday destinations. Cairns and Surfers Paradise have been voted the first and second best places to visit respectively in the Travelers Choice Destinations Awards 2011, according to global travel site TripAdvisor.
Further, Cairns recently ranks the fourth most visited place in Australia, following the major cities Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, according to Tourism Australia.
So does Cairns really outshine Surfers Paradise? Truth is, they’re apples and kiwis—these two bright regions attract visitors for very different reasons.
Cairns is “the perfect city for merry revelers, passionate divers and adrenaline junkies, offering booming nightlife and heart-pounding adventure amid a vibrant, tropical setting,” according to TripAdvisor. The city is known for its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, among other natural sites such as Cape Tribulation, Daintree National Park, Cooktown and the Cape York Peninsula.
As voted by travelers on TripAdvisor, the greatest attractions in Cairns are the eco tours. On the Great Barrier Reef Adventure, you board a fast catamaran and spend the day experiencing the reef by snorkelling, by scuba diving, or through the underwater observatory.

The Green Island Discovery tour is also a popular choice for nature lovers. You travel to Green Island, a 6000-year-old coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef, aboard a catamaran. On this tour, spend 7 hours on the island, enjoying a tour on a glass-bottom boat, snorkelling the reef, taking an eco walk, and swimming in the island pool, among other optional activities.
For better value, you may also combine eco tours by purchase a 3 Day Ultimate Reef Pass. With this, you can book three of six cruises for the price of two.
According to votes on TripAdvisor, the reef experiences are followed by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, White Water Rafting and other extreme sports, and Cape Tribulation tours in Cairns.

Surfers Paradise, on the other hand, is more developed and offers many built attractions, such as theme parks, dinner show venues, spas, shopping centres, and several restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
TripAdvisor suggests, as a Surfers’ visitor, you may want to: “Refuel at one of Surfers Paradise‘s 150 restaurants and cafes, or hit a Northside day spa to soothe your surf-weary muscles and smooth your sun-kissed skin.”
Travellers using TripAdvisor recommend Skypoint as the top attraction to visit. For $21.00 for adults and $12.50 for children, you can ride the express lift up the 322.4 metre-high Q1 building and enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the entire Gold Coast.
You may also purchase cost-effective Skypoint packages that include entry and food and beverages. Other well-rated attractions include Infinity, Ripley’s Believe It or Now, and the three theme parks, Warner Brothers’ Movie World, Sea World, and Wet ‘n’ Wild.
It may not be home to the reef or large rainforests, but don’t let the top rated things to do in Surfers mislead you. There is also great natural beauty in this area; in fact, according to TripAdvisor, Surfers Paradise comes in 5th for the best beach in the South Pacific, whereas Cairns doesn’t make the top ten cut.
So, do you want to spend the day touring tropical rainforests or riding roller coasters and surfing the waves? Are you looking to dive into the sea and marvel at the reef or do you wish to drink and dine in the Skybar overlooking beach and high-rise buildings? Travellers, you must first decide what you want from your vacations before picking Cairns over Surfers Paradise!
Book your Gold Coast or Cairns experiences here!
Global travel site TripAdvisor has ranked Cairns number 1 travel destination in Queensland. The mix of attractions, activities, hot air ballooning, white water rafting and of course the great barrier reef helped the destination outrank other hot spots such as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. What do we think? All depends on the demographic of the traveller. If your travelling as a couple and have money to spend, then the unique attractions of Tropical North Queensland are very appealing. From Helicopter flights to the barrier reef to Skyrail and Kuranda, North Queensland would be my choice.
On the other hand, if I am a budget concious traveller or travelling with a family, nobody could dispute that the Gold Coast is a far superior destination. Gold Coast has the cheapest accommodation in Australia and combine this with great deals on theme park passes and other attractions, then the Gold Coast is hard to beat. At the end of the day, its down to you, the traveller!

As you may be aware, the Great Barrier Reef has been greatly affected due to Cyclone Yasi, with moderate to sever damage to the Coral Reef and many communities around Cairns and the Whitsunday’s.
However….
The Southern Great Barrier Reef south of Gladstone (Lady Musgrave Island area) has been totally untouched and unaffected by these conditions. Those tourists who have had their plans disrupted due to the problems faced up north can still visit the SOUTHERN – Great Barrier Reef. Tourists who wish to visit the Great Barrier Reef can do so and enjoy the full benefits of the Great Barrier Reef with the following companies:
* Australian Sunset Safaris – departing from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast
* Lady Musgrave Cruises – Departing the Town of 1770.
FRASER ISLAND
Fraser Island has also been untouched by the cyclone, and is business as usual. Conditions on Fraser Island are described as “Beautiful.”
This is important information for those customers travelling to Tropical North Queensland – please reconfirm all travel movements with airlines and/or tour operators before travelling to the region from Wednesday the 2nd Feb through to the 7th of Feb.
