Please describe your plans for this year’s whale watching season Our aim during the 2010 whale season is to keep our 100% whale sightings record intact while continuing to operate premium whale watching tours with a high level of customer satisfaction. Have you made any changes to your vessels or itineraries? Sea World Whale Watch will be offering two whale trips per day during the 2010 whale season departing at 10.00am and 2.00pm. Returning at 12.30pm and 4.30pm. Allow 3 hours per tour. Tell us about your ”eco-friendly vessel” The state of the art Sea World Whale Watch vessel “Spirit of Migloo” is the newest on the Gold Coast and the only vessel currently operating that is custom designed and constructed for environmentally friendly whale watching. Her custom keel design protects whales from harm and the ultra quiet engines exceed international emission standards and produce minimal underwater noise so the whales are not disturbed. Toilet and greywater waste is kept in holding tanks onboard and never allowed to pollute the ocean. We are entering the world of the whales and so wish to make as little impact upon their world as possible. Do you limit passenger numbers on these trips? We restrict passenger numbers to a maximum of 125 to ensure the whale watching experience remains a personal one. You will never have to look over another passenger’s shoulder to see a whale on a Sea World Whale Watch tour. Is your vessel equipped to accommodate disabled people? Details? Yes. We are the only whale watching vessel on the Gold Coast equipped to carry disabled passengers. Vessel access and lower deck viewing platforms are wheelchair friendly. There is a disabled toilet on the lower deck. Do you guarantee sighting a whale each trip? Yes. We provide a full refund if your tour does not sight a whale. There is a separate refund policy for the Combo Ticket What happens if you don’t? If you don’t see whales we provide you with a full refund. How inquisitive are adult and calf whales? Adult whales can see as well above water as they can below so they often raise their heads from the ocean by “lunging” or “spyhopping” in order to eyeball our vessel and passengers. New whale calves are very inquisitive and often approach the vessel to take a closer look – to the dismay of the protective mothers. Do they swim up to the vessel? Yes, we regularly have to shut down our vessel engines while the whales slowly cruise around the vessel taking their time to have a good look at us. Have there been instances where passengers have touched whales? Almost. However, it is illegal to touch whales or wild dolphins in Australian waters due to the possibility of transmission of human diseases such as flu viruses to marine mammals. How would you describe the passenger’s feelings after encountering whales? Many passengers describe their Sea World Whale Watch tour as a life-changing experience. There are often tears of joy and wonder Have you seen instances of mothers feeding their calves? Yes. The mother whale rolls onto her back and the calf rests on her belly while suckling the thick, fat-rich milk which is the consistency of condensed milk.
The awesome sight of a fully grown Humpback Whale leaping clear of the ocean directly in front of the vessel. What changes about the whales have you observed over the years? There are more of them, they are becoming friendlier and they tend to rest and play longer around the Gold Coast Bay area How would you rank this area as a whale watching destination, and why? The Gold Coast is positioned to become Australia’s leading whale watching location. The reasons for this are:
